Living in a Body™ is a 20 hour body mapping certification course, designed by International Alexander Teacher/Trainer Robyn Avalon over 30 years ago. It offers a simple, clear, and fun exploration of the basic mechanics of human movement and support. It is the quintessential owner’s guide to using our bodies in accordance with our design, allowing people of all ages to experience ease in their body.
LIAB™ is used as a foundational course for multiple Alexander Technique Teacher Training Courses worldwide, as well as a range of somatic and music education programs. Everyone is welcome - no previous experience needed.
What is Body Mapping?
Your nervous system uses your beliefs about your body to organize your body. Body Mapping is the study of your beliefs. In LIAB™ you upgrade your software (beliefs) so that it accurately matches your hardware (anatomy), thus letting your body access natural ease, flexibility, and strength.
LIAB™ is open to all those interested in understanding the functional design of the body. It is particularly useful for professionals and teachers in performing and fine arts, movement and martial arts, fitness and athletics, equestrians, primary educators, body workers, therapists, and health professionals.
Self-paced online lessons - Each week there will be experiential lessons (text and video) for you to complete at your own pace and timing. The lessons build on each other, and new lessons become available after each online class.
Live virtual classes - There are live zoom Q&A sessions available upon request, and the opportunity to share our experiences of using the material in our lives and work. Wherever you are in the course, we will all have an opportunity to share our surprises, confusions, and transformations. Contact us for details on the current schedule.
Part 1 & Part 2 - The online course is called Part 1, and takes you through a complete re-thinking around how your body is organized, through self-paced online study. Part 2 is done in person, offering effective ways to teach mapping to groups. It also includes material on how to see a person's maps/mismaps - what ideas they are literally wearing, and then, how to use experiential studies to help them discover their true map. Part 1 is required before taking Part 2. Part 2 is offered in person in the US, EU and Asia. Part 2 is a separate course, with its own fee. Contact us for the Part 2, in-person schedule for your area.
Here is some background about how the course was developed, nearly 30 years ago: The Story of LIAB™

In diesem ersten Modul lernen wir den Unterschied zwischen Mapping und Anatomie kennen und treffen einen Alien Bug!
Your Head.
What is it? Where is it? What does it do?
Why do you care?
In this Module, you will learn about how your arms are attached, how each joint is designed to move, and some cool info about how are arms are really wings!
At the end of the unit is another true story, this one about Rock Climbers, and a bonus description of the Hikers Exploring and Arm.
This Module is filled with videos and activities to try out on your own.
Enjoy!
Breathing seems like something that wouldn't need a map - after all, it's automatic.
But, as you will soon see, our maps of breathing, (as well as our maps of legs, arms, torso, spine, and head) can profoundly effect our breath.
MODUL 7 - ATMUNG
